In 2012 we met our goal of 1600 blankets to be donated to the Brown Bag Program. See more in this post!
Each Ward has been asked to complete 24 hours of service by contributing to needs in their individual communities. Below is a summary of each Ward's plans for this year to meet this goal. Check back often for updates on projects!
Eufaula: The Eufaula Ward has several upcoming service projects for their sisters. The projects are 1. The Clearinghouse, 2.Pregnancy Crisis Center, 3.Hippy Program, 4. Back to school supplies for needy families, 5. Christmas for kids in need in the ward and 6. Service projects for the ward members. All these are in Eufaula community and 24 service hours will be split among them.
Each project requires a variety of needs from the sisters. Some projects will require delivery of donations, assembling packages to be passed out to the community, and one will involve child care while parents are learning how to teach school skills in their homes. Sign up sheets and announcements will be made to the sisters to keep everyone updated and provide opportunities for involvement. Sisters will be notified 4-6 weeks in advance to allow plenty of time for planning. The Eufala Ward will be taking pictures and keeping a log throughout the year to document their success!
Mariana: The Marianna Ward will participate in the Weekend Back Pack Project. This project will provide needy children with a back pack of food to have over the weekend and for holidays when not in school. This project will serve the students that attend Jackson County Schools. The resources needed for this project are food and backpacks. The sisters will be involved in gathering both of these items for the project. Sisters will also serve by packing and delivering the back packs. The hours spent on the project will be reported to the Relief Society Secretary and the amount of food gathered will be recorded as well.
Dothan 2nd Ward: The Dothan 2nd Ward is participating in the Birthday Box program for the children at the House of Ruth. The House of Ruth is a Shelter for women in the Wiregrass area. A box is filled with cake mix, icing, candles, and birthday surprises for children (either boy or girl). The Relief Society sisters and the Primary children are participating in the project. The boxes are gathered from the members and delivered to the House of Ruth.
Dothan 1st Ward: The Dothan First Ward will be participating in service with the Child Advocacy Center. The Child Advocacy Center has a Blue Ribbon Month as one of their fundraisers. The Relief Society Sisters will help in various tasks to assist with the Blue Ribbon Campaign. They will sort T-Shirts, prepare flyers, and deliver items to local businesses. The sisters will also complete other needed tasks to assist with the success of the campaign. The Sisters will be of assistance for any additional volunteer efforts needed by the Child Advocacy Center throughout the year.
Ozark: The Ozark Ward
plans to serve foster children in the Wiregrass Area. We want to provide a
backpack with several items which they can claim as their own to each
child that is taken from their home and placed in a foster home. Many of
these children come to foster parents with nothing. Others come with a plastic
bag to to carry the items they
might have. (Most of these homes are drug homes
and extremely filthy and the children do not have anything of their
own, not even a toothbrush). One little boy is five years old and has been
in six foster homes! Because of the home situation and moving
back and forth between foster homes if they come with any personal items (and
most don't) they are lost in the shuffle. By giving each child their own
backpack with a few personal items that are just theirs, it will provide some
sense of belonging and a feeling that they matter. The sisters will be asked to
donate new or slightly used items looking for items they have in their homes,
at garage sales or good store sales. They will make the blankets, pillows & pillowcases, and
P.J.'s. at special meetings throughout the project. A sign up sheet will be
used to log hours spent on making items, filling the back packs, and delivering
them to the foster program manager.
